About

Son Tao was born in Vietnam and raised in Pennsylvania, forging a unique path marked by resilience, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to service. Initially working as an engineer, Son's life dramatically shifted following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, prompting him to join the United States Army. His military career spanned an impressive 23 years of active duty as an infantryman, with over eight years spent deployed overseas supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice.

During his extensive deployments, Son witnessed firsthand the brutal realities and profound losses of combat, experiences that left lasting physical and emotional scars. The cumulative effects of these experiences left him struggling deeply, as his brain remained in a constant heightened state of awareness and vigilance due to deployment-related injuries.

Seeking solace and healing, Son discovered the transformative power of fly fishing and fly tying. His newfound passion became instrumental in his journey toward recovery, providing therapeutic relief and a renewed sense of purpose. Son's dedication and skill were nationally recognized when he won the prestigious 5th Annual Project Healing Waters National Fly Tying Competition in 2017.

Since achieving that milestone, Son's inspirational journey has been featured in multiple articles, books, and online platforms. His story and insights even reached a broader audience through his appearance as a guest on the widely popular "Meateater Podcast."

Today, Son Tao continues to inspire and advocate for healing, resilience, and the profound power of nature in overcoming adversity. He is passionate about promoting the sport of fly fishing and helping others. When not on the water or behind the vise, Son volunteers with Project Healing Waters, Reeling in Serenity, and other nonprofits that promote the power of fly fishing.
